Squid Game is taking the world by storm and is setting up to become Netflix’s highest viewed show EVER. Naturally, fans are flocking to the internet searching for the dalgona candy recipe used in one of the bloodiest scenes from the series and I have all the information you need to get started.
As an avid horror buff, I immediately began to do research on the origin of the candy that resembles a cookie after finishing the South Korean drama and was happy to find that it’s easier than you think to recreate.
Wondering what it feels like? Something like a honeycomb, having a consistency that is both very thin and wafer-like. My entire family is watching this horror show and I can PROMISE YOU that we will be doing this activity together once we finished the finale tonight.
As an American, I will also say that I thought I was watching the contestants try not to break cookies on Squid Game. I think the round shape automatically made me think of a vanilla wafer for some reason. But upon further research, considering there are only two ingredients needed to recreate this recipe, it is clearly candy and not a cookie.

- 1 1/2 tablespoons of sugar
- pinch of baking soda
- various cookie cutters
In order to make dalgona, made famous in the US by Squid Game, stir the sugar over medium heat until it is fully dissolved. Then add just a pinch of baking soda and stir once again until completely combined and liquified.
Grab a baking sheet and create the shape you’d like for your candy cookie. You can use a cookie cutter to help mold the circle, or just eye it by hand.
As the sugar is hardening, gently press a shape into the center of your treat. Do not put a lot of pressure when forming your design because it will crack your candy.
During Episode 3, The Man with the Umbrella, we saw four shapes being used: circle, triangle, umbrella, and star. Press a smaller cookie cutter shape of your choice into the center of the wafer-like substance and create an imprint of the design.
Allow the candy cookie to harden and cool.
How To Play The Game
In order to play the game similar to the one seen on Netflix, you will need a needle and a hard surface like a tin lid to rest your candy on. Players will have to use their needle to separate the design found in the center of the wafer that has been carved without breaking the design. If they damage the original shape in any way, they lose.
This is a game that takes a lot of patience. If you are fan of the show, we saw Seong Gi-hun use saliva to help soften the wafer and Han Mi-Nyeo use fire to help work through the sugar substance. Decide whether or not these extra add-ons are allowed or if patience will be your only ally.
Obviously, losing while in the Squid Game is a lot different than playing amongst your friends. Decide what the consequences will be and have fun!
