NASA’s Asteroid Tracker shows that an asteroid the size of Burj Khalifa in Dubai – the tallest building in the world – is heading towards Earth and will pass us in mid-December. .
According to The Jerusalem Post, this giant asteroid is called 163899 (2003 SD220), with a diameter of about 791m and a length of nearly 805m.
However, observations made by the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico in 2015 suggest it could be much larger, at least 2km long. The scientists compared its shape to that of a sweet potato.
Then, NASA used different measuring instruments to determine the asteroid’s size. NASA estimates show it to be 791m in diameter.
The asteroid is expected to pass by Earth on December 17 at a speed of 5.6km/s. Although classified as a potentially hazardous asteroid based on its size and proximity to Earth, it is unlikely to pose a threat to us. NASA has stated that no asteroid will threaten the safety of the Earth in the next century. While it could one day hit Earth, current estimates suggest it’s not a cause for concern at the moment.
This asteroid could even become the target of a robotic exploration mission.
