(LDO)- An image of an ancient galaxy over 12 billion years old has appeared before Earth’s eyes, showing that the things that make up our bodies have been forged since the dawn of the universe.
Using the ALMA super telescope located in Chile’s Atacama desert, a team of scientists from the European Southern Observatory (ESO), the University of Herdfordshire (UK) and another institute detected the presence of fluorine (fluorine). fluorine) – which makes up our bones and teeth in the form of fluoride – in an ancient galaxy, SciTech Daily reports. The element fluorine exists as hydrogen fluoride in the galaxy NGP–190387, an object that existed 12 billion years ago, when our universe was just over 1 billion years old. Because it is 12 billion light-years away, the image of this galaxy also takes about the same time to “pass through” to Earth and be picked up by the observatory.
According to Dr Maximilien Franco from the University of Herdfordshire, the source of fluorine must be stars that, when they die and explode, release fluorine and many other special elements from the core. But since fluorine has been detected in a galaxy that is only 1.4 billion years old at most, it must be a form of star with a short life span, which is born and dies quickly.
Therefore, the most likely origin is Wolf-Rayet stars, the most massive form of stars in the universe but “live” only a few million years old – a small fraction of the age of the Sun. This galaxy may have once been dense with stars of this kind because the fluorine levels here are comparable to the world in the Milky Way – the galaxy containing the Earth.
The discovery of NGP–190387 marked one of the first detections of fluorine outside the galaxy, showing that much of what makes up our world – and ours – has actually been forged since the dawn of the universe , in ancient galaxies that may not have existed until now.
The study has just been published in the scientific journal Nature Astronomy.
